About Living in Wonderland...

Victor Banner is not only the comic book collector that you all know (more than 55.000 comic books ) he also enjoys surrounding himself with toys, thousands of toys from all ages. That´s how he lives and, believe it or not, his son Adam plays with all of them and, usually, never break them.

The Annotated Universal Horrors

The request that we receive most is about the meaning of the tune Universal Horrors.
Victor took the time today to throw some light on the subject:

Note: The following lyrics are the original ones, a few changes had to be made in order to make the tune sound more CATCHY.

                                          UNIVERSAL HORRORS

(Universal Movie logo 1930´s)

A whole bunch of ancient shadows made it to the screen
In a time where silent movies were a HIT

A hunchback of crowned head (The Hunchback of Notre Dame - 1923)

and Erik were the advance  (Erik, The Phantom of the Opera - 1925)

of the folks with the longest fangs  (Dracula - 1931)

Chorus:

Run to the castle and enjoy the universal horrors

Bela was so dark                  (Bela Lugosi)

but Boris was so sweet!!!   (Boris Karloff)

Hold to your torches and meet the universal horrors
Enjoy the swirling mist,

white zombies and the creeps   (White Zombie - 1932)

Watch where you step there is a man struggling in the basement
A spider wants him dead
He is shrinking fast my dear

(The Incredible Shrinking Man - 1957)

British invasión tried in vain to bring new terrors
Great supporting cast but Hammer did not last

(Hammer Horrors)
Chorus:

It gives me the creeps just to think of the universal horrors
Princess of the dawn...

...and monsters from the deep!!! (Creature from the Black Lagoon - 1954)

Lee was good at it but Lugosi was immortal (Christopher Lee, Dracula in the series of the Hammer Horror films)

Son of Frankenstein, the stories were the same (Son of Frankenstein - 1939)

(Lon Chaney Jr. was Larry Talbot in The Wolf Man - 1941)

I still  remember well when Larry Talbot was Lon Chaney,  Brilliant make- up job!!! A man turned into a Wolf!!!

Monster magazines,

pin up girls (Evelyn Ankers) and...

                                            ...double sessions

rising from the grave,..

...Ananka is on the way        (The Mummy´s Ghost - 1944)

Thanks for making this song an Universal Hit!!!!

Banner.

My Child

"My Child" is based on the first memories of Adam, Victor´s only child, who was three years old when he inspired the song, a madrigal that has nothing to do with the pastoral thing: Batman (Adam West) fighting the bad guys at the end of the old movie from 1966, "taking the boat" along with Robin; Tintin, Haddock, Snowy and the search of the Unicorn; Peter and the wolf, Flash Gordon (the King Features Syndicate cartoons) and Spiderman (Sam Raimi).

This beautiful tune was number one in digital downloads in Singapore, Corea, Argentina and Brazil.

Life in the Country

Victor is a very down to earth man and the thing that he enjoys the most is to walk hand in hand with his son, Adam, through the heart of the country where the holy people grow, smelling the grass in the meadow... Paul McCartney knew it all and he was right!

Ozymandias, the Man Behind the Hit

When Banner wrote Ozymandias back in 2005 for the israeli singer Noa (his favorite singer) he was inspired not only by the character created by Alan Moore for his Watchmen, he also fusioned a couple of obscure poems by Percy Shelley and his friend Horace Smith.

Here you got both poems and also the final lyrics chosen by Banner:

Shelley's "Ozymandias"

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
'My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away."

Smith's "Ozymandias"

In Egypt's sandy silence, all alone,
Stands a gigantic Leg, which far off throws
The only shadow that the Desert knows:—
"I am great OZYMANDIAS," saith the stone,
"The King of Kings; this mighty City shows
"The wonders of my hand."— The City's gone,—
Nought but the Leg remaining to disclose
The site of this forgotten Babylon.

We wonder,—and some Hunter may express
Wonder like ours, when thro' the wilderness
Where London stood, holding the Wolf in chace,
He meets some fragment huge, and stops to guess
What powerful but unrecorded race
Once dwelt in that annihilated place.

Banner´s solution (please, don´t miss the personal message at the end of the lyrics!):

First verse:

If i sing my song for you…
If I´d said my heart is true
Would you rise straight from the dust of your Karnak
(my soul is waiting here my love)

Second Verse:

If i sing this song for you
Would your hands, rebuild the land,
King of kings, a Babylon settled in stone
(playing ancient rites of the moon)

Chorus:

Your world is beautiful, so very beautiful,
How can the universe collapse in two?

Your face is beautiful, your spiritit is beautiful,
Still reigns among the stones of your Karnak

Third verse:

All alone,  gigantic Legs, which far off throws shadows of dust,
King of kings, said the stone, The City's gone,—(Nought but the Legs remaining true)

Fourth Verse:

In this land, Half sunk in sand, a shattered visage look us back, with wrinkled lips that seems to say: (“My name is Ozymandias)

Chorus:

Just behold my works!!! You mighty and despair!!!” Nothing else beside the stone remains...

Your face is beautiful, your spiritit is beautiful,
Still reigns among the stones of your Karnak*

* Dear Noa, i have sung a different verse in the guide vocals but i think that this one fits much better to finish the song. Sorry if i drive you nuts!!!!

Banner after Zappa

A few sketches from Victor Banner´s vaults... Banner adores Frank Zappa´s style as you can probably recognize watching the following drawings.
Many of this drawings were made as concept artwork for the spanish band "Semos los Mojinos Escozios" , a group highly inspired by the late genius. Many were never completed.

Sunset Superman

Victor Banner has been working for years in the making of a special film based on several DC Comics characters. Since not many people know this, we want to show you one of the sketches used as a guideline for the rest of the artists working in the production. Victor made every sketch of the film, this means hundreds of drawings!

Banner´s BIG august showcase

Stay tuned to the august editions of Burnn! magazine, Hard Rock, Classic Rock, Rock of the 70´s and Equalizer because Victor Banner explains it all about "Proclamation of Shadows" the new Stardust Reverie album! He also takes his time rambling on about Kansas, Rainbow, Jethro Tull, Savatage and E.L.O. as his main influences and how wonderful it is working with his all time heroes.

About Blackmore´s Night and Stardust Reverie

Burrn! Magazine includes this month an exclusive interview with Graham Bonnet and Victor Banner.
Much has been talked about the relationship between Blackmore´s Night and Stardust Reverie (not to mention Rainbow and SR). Well, Burrn! focused that interview precisely on that.
Attached here are a few photos from a 1997 Blackmore´s Night show featuring Victor Banner on vocals.
That was the first Blackmore´s Night tour presenting their first album "Shadow of the Moon". Candice Night felt sick so the gig was cancelled.  Anyway, for an unknow reason, Blackmore´s Night performed a private show that night and Victor was picked by Ritchie to join them on vocals.

Ritchie was happy and gentle and even dated a few guys from the audience to play soccer the next day!!!
